Canada’s Express Entry system is now prioritizing the education sector, giving specific education professionals a much better chance at permanent residence (PR).

This new Express Entry category was announced on February 27, with five occupations under its umbrella.

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) recently conducted its first category-based selection draw for the Education category, issuing 1,000 invitations to apply (ITAs), with a cut-off Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score of 479.

Here are some fictional profiles that would have qualified to receive an ITA in the latest draw under Canada’s new Education category.

Example 1

Christina Navarro is a 26-year-old from the Philippines.

After completing her bachelor’s degree in education, she moved to Canada to pursue a two-year post-secondary college program, and received a diploma in Educational Support.

Following this, Christina received a post-graduation work permit and stayed to work in Canada, getting an entry level job and working for two years as an educational assistant at an elementary school.

Christina has a Canadian Language Benchmark level 9 in English in all abilities.

She does not have any foreign work experience, nor does she know any French.

Factors determining CRS Score Qualifications Points accrued
Age 26 110
Education Bachelor’s degree + Canadian diploma 128
English language proficiency CLB 9 124
Canadian work experience 2 years 53
Skill Transferability factors (education) Diploma + CLB 8 50
Additional factors  (study in Canada) Canadian diploma 15
Total 480

Core human capital points = 415

Skill transferability points = 50

Additional factors = 15

Based on these factors, Christina has a CRS score of 480, qualifying her for the latest draw in the Education category.

Example 2

Akram Shah is a 29-year-old professor from Pakistan.

Akram has a Bachelor’s degree in science, followed by a master’s degree in Education in Lahore. Following that, he taught in a school for three years as a secondary school teacher.

He speaks English well and has CLB Level 10 in English across all abilities. He has no knowledge of French.

Factors determining CRS Score Qualifications Points accrued
Age 29 110
Education Master’s Degree 135
English language proficiency CLB 10 136
Skill Transferability factors (education) Master’s + CLB 10 50
Skill Transferability factors (Foreign work experience) Foreign work experience + CLB 10 50
Total 481

Human capital factors = 381

Skill transferability factors = 100

Total: 481

Based on the above factors, Akram would qualify for the latest Education category-based draw.

It is worth noting that Education is a regulated profession in Canada, and Akram will have to get certified to teach in Canada. Certification is done on the provincial level so the requirements would depend on the province Akram decides to work in.

Example 3

Simone Brown is a 28-year-old married woman with a bachelor’s degree in social work and three years of work experience in Jamaica. She has a CLB level 9 in English across all abilities, and has also completed a two-year diploma in disability and community support in Canada.

She has no Canadian work experience.

Her husband Anthony has a Master’s degree from Jamaica and scored CLB level 10+ in English across all abilities. He has a year of Canadian work experience.

Neither of them knows French.

Factors determining CRS Score Qualifications Points accrued
Age 28 100
Education Bachelor’s degree plus two year diploma 119
English language proficiency CLB 9 116
Skill Transferability factors (education) Diploma + CLB 9 50
Skill Transferability factors (Foreign work experience) Foreign work experience + CLB 9 50
Additional points Study in Canada 15
Spousal factors
Spouse’s education Master’s degree 10
Spouse’s language ability CLB 10+ 20
Spouse’s Canadian work experience 1 year 5
Total points 485

Human capital factors = 335

Spouse factors = 35

Skill transferability factors = 100

Additional points (study in Canada) = 15

Total: 485

Based on these factors, Simone (with her husband’s help) has a CRS score of 485, qualifying her for the most recent Education category-based draw.
